.....on German Battlecruiser design for years. If you want to know about the tortured political and design paths German Battlecruisers of WWI went through then this book is for you. Granted its in German, but the drawings and the tables of data alone will provide you with much interesting and unpublished information on these ships that have never appeared in English. With a translation program and a good few hours per chapter you will learn about how German BCs were seen as a form of fast battleship from the start rather than a mere all-big-gun armoured cruiser (that the British did). Discover Von der Tann's original arrangement for her main guns was in fact quite similar to Invincible until the German's learned that Invincible could fire all of her guns on a broadside (which she could but only to a very limited extent and then with blast consequences). Also interesting are rejected alternative designs for Seydlitz, some exploring British Orion class layouts while others have bigger guns. The list is endless... Most interesting too are the photographs, many never seen before.
Text wise, it is in German which this reviewer cannot speak. However any serious naval historian will find this book a vital one for their collection. Translation is a pain but you will discover much about the political and design history of German battlecruisers of the first world war. The book stops at just beyond the Yorck class and does not delve into the 6 digit GK series like GK4021. Nor does the book cover operation and action histories of the ships concerned which have been covered pretty well in English anyway. One final bonus are a set of 3 removable drawings of various German BCs that were completed in the back of the book. The modeller should find these very useful while the enthusiast will find them helpful answering technical issues on these ships.
In summary, this is most revealing work on the design and development of German BCs in years. None of which has ever appeared published in English to my mind. The research is original and the author deserves full credit for his efforts here. In fact I wish he would do one on the older German Armoured Cruisers, German pre-dreadnoughts, German light cruisers and destroyers from that era and some 50 odd years before (and I'm sure they would sell like hot cakes in English).
