The most enlightening book...

.....on German battleship design for years. If you want to know about the tortured political and design paths German Battleships of WWI went through then this book is for you. Granted its in German, but the drawings and the tables of data alone will provide you with much interesting and unpublished information on these ships that have never appeared in English. You will discover line drawings showing sketches for proposals of the so called Brazilian arrangement for one of the designs. And a refreshing view on Germany's first dreadnought, the Nassau.
Text wise, it is in German which this reviewer cannot speak. However any serious naval historian will find this book a vital one for their collection. Translation is a pain but you will discover much about the political and design history of German battleships of the first world war. The book stops at just beyond the Baden class and does not delve into the discussions over L20e alpha design (which sadly can only be found in another German book). Indeed I found that the Baden class was a bit thin on the ground suggesting that either not many sketches were considered or the information has been lost. The book does not cover operational and action histories of the ships concerned, but these have been covered pretty well in English anyway.
One major gripe is that the work seems nearly half the thickness of the authors battlecruiser book and also that the book does not contain any detailed removable drawings. Its like as if the author was restricted for space here. It is for this reason that I seriously considered giving only 4 stars but the originality of the work has made me award 5. The book is not as good as the author's Grosser Kruezer book but excellent none the less.
In summary, this is most revealing work on the design and development of German BBs in years. Little of which has ever appeared published in English to my mind. The research is original and the author deserves full credit for his efforts here. In fact I wish he would do one on the older German Armoured Cruisers, German pre-dreadnoughts, German light cruisers and destroyers from that era and some 50 odd years before (and I'm sure they would sell like hot cakes in English).
